The main port of the island is named Gialos and the upper town Chorio. On Symi you will enjoy the sea even in April or November due to its mild climate and its many days of sunshine, it has one of the longest summers.<\/p><p>The island&#8217;s history goes back to ancient times. Its ancient name was Aigli, Metapontis and Kariki. First inhabitants of the island are considered to the Kares ang Leleges. Symi&#8217;s incorporation to the Greek state was made in March 7, 1948.<\/p><h5><strong>Places to visit are:<\/strong><\/h5><ul><li>The trireme sculpted in rock in the port of Gilaos and the sign for the 8th of May 1945, date when the Germans surrendered Symi to the Allies.<\/li><li>The cathedral of Ag.
